Polls: Army chief warns politicians against inciting violence
Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General KT Minimah has declared that any politician or group of politicians who instigate violence during the elections should be ready to face organized violence in return.
“Regarding the question of security before, during and post elections, I want to say the Armed Forces, the Police and other security organisations have made adequate arrangements for security during the general and local elections in a few days and a few weeks coming,” he said.
“I do not envisage any issues because this is just an election and it will come and go; though we know there are also elements within the political class that will not want a normal election process to come and be put behind us.
“I will appeal to politicians and their followers and supporters to keep the peace; maintain the peace and ensure a violence-free election. I will appeal to law-abiding Nigerians to come out en-masse, vote for candidates of their choice without fear of intimidation, without fear for their safety. It is their right to vote.
“And whoever wants to invoke or provoke violence would meet organised violence waiting for him. Whoever threatens violence will meet violence.”
When asked why soldiers are still on the streets when a court order had barred them from elections, Minimah said: “I can interpret it this way. This is not our first elections in this country. You have seen several elections in Nigeria and you have seen soldiers providing security for the elections. Have you at any time seen soldiers at polling booths? Have you seen soldiers counting ballots or carrying ballot materials, ballot papers, ballot boxes or whatever?”
FG planning to arrest APC leaders, Tinubu alleges
National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, yesterday, said Federal Government was planning to arrest leaders of his party ahead of Saturday’s election. However, he said he was ready for arrest.
Speaking at the 7th Annual Bola Tinubu Colloquium in Lagos to mark his 63rd birthday, the former governor of Lagos State said the plot will not silence him.
He insisted that the APC had a better ticket in Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) and Professor Yemi Osinbajo than the President Goodluck Jonathan and Vice President Namadi Sambo’s team of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Also speaking at the event, Buhari said the seamless manner APC merger was consummated and the pedigree and long-time service of the leaders will yield electoral dividends for the party.
“This was possible because of their personal service in their constituencies. They have served people so much that they have developed so much confidence in them.
“Though there have been previous mergers but they never materialized. And the most interesting thing is that we looked at the opposition parties, and we realized that none of them can compete with PDP.
“And during the merger, some of the parties had court cases that could delay the merger. So we constituted committees in each of the parties and they provided their terms of references. And I was told by Chief Bisi Akande that some of the parties are demanding for certain positions. But I said that the most important thing is that the merger must works. And after that, we will sit down and decide on each demand.
“All my previous attempt to defeat PDP ended up at the Supreme Court. But with this merger, we have done the right job. With the merger, we are witnessing progresses and come Saturday, we will succeed at the polls by God’s grace.”
APC stalwarts present at the event include National Chairman, Chief John Oyegun; former Interim National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande; former Governor of Ekiti and Osun states. Dr. Kayode Fayemi and Segun Oni, respectively; wife of Ogun State Governor, Mrs Olufunsho Amosun; mother of the Vice Presidential candidate, Mrs Bisi Osinbajo; Prof Pat Utomi and Chief Lanre Rasaq.

Thorgan Hazard signs for Bundesliga club
Thorgan Hazard has today signed for Borussia Monchengladbach, with Chelsea having the right to exercise a future buy-back option.
Hazard initially joined the Bundesliga club at the start of the season on loan.
The 21-year-old Belgian signed for Chelsea in 2012 - the same summer as older brother Eden.
He immediately joined Belgian top-flight club SV Zulte Waregem on loan for two seasons, where he finished as a league runner up, with his form earning individual honours and a senior international cap in May 2013.
Chelsea Football Club wishes Thorgan well for the future and will continue to monitor his progress.
Jose Mourinho's 'campaign' comments come full circle as referee Anthony Taylor takes charge of Capital One Cup final against Tottenham
Jose Mourinho's recent fury at referees reached new heights this weekend in Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Burnley - and by coincidence the man who helped set it all off will be back in the Chelsea boss' firing line at Wembley on Sunday.
Anthony Taylor - the man who booked Cesc Fabregas for diving in Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Southampton in December - is the referee for the Capital One Cup final that pits Chelsea against Tottenham.
The 36-year-old official apologised to Mourinho for his mistake after the Portuguese coach slammed Taylor and said he would be 'ashamed' of the decision.

At Southampton Taylor infuriated Chelsea's players, and particularly Cesc Fabregas, with one decision
Fabregas is brought down by Southampton's Matt Targett inside the area but Taylor saw it as a dive
The Special One also said that a campaign had been started against his Chelsea players after the latest in a string of allegations that they were prone to cheating - comments that led to a £25,000 fine from the FA.
'It is a scandal,' Mourinho said at the time. 'I think it is clearly the result of something that looks like a campaign.
'We lose two points in a match where the penalty is there and Fabregas gets a yellow card.
Fabregas reacts with incredulity after being booked for simulation after going down in the area
Chelsea's Spanish midfielder cannot quite believe the decision, and now he faces Taylor at Wembley
'The reality there are penalties and penalties - this one was a huge one. It was not just a small penalty. It was a penalty like Big Ben. In other countries this is front-page news because it's an absolute scandal.
'Match after match coaches are telling Chelsea players are diving. I will go to the referee and wish him a good year and tell him he will be ashamed.'
Mourinho spoke out again about referees during an appearance on Goals on Sunday at the weekend
Taylor has been given the chance to referee at Wembley in the Capital One Cup final on Sunday
Mourinho spoke out again on his perceived injustice on Sunday in an interview with Goals on Sunday after Nemanja Matic was sent off for reacting to a bad tackle from Ashley Barnes - potentially risking his place at the showpiece at Wembley Stadium.
'The problem is the incidents I'm speaking about and probably now I'm risking my dugout in the final,' he said. 'Maybe tomorrow I have the risk of being suspended because I'm having this conversation.'
Tottenham beat Chelsea in another game where Mourinho was frustrated with the refereeing in December
