I’ll Make Ogun An Oil-Producing State, Says PDP Gov. Candidate, Isiaka

Gboyega IsiakaThe governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State, Mr. Gboyega Isiaka, on Thursday said if elected next month in the general elections, his administration would make Ogun an oil-producing state.
Speaking during a parley with workers’ union under the aegis of the Trade Union Congress in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, Isiaka accused the incumbent Governor and candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Sen. Ibikunle Amosun of making life hard for workers in the state by denying them their entitlements.
The PDP candidate, who expressed concern over the fall in federal allocation and economic downturn, said his administration would explore viable revenue generation opportunities in the state.
He also promised to provide better welfare package for workers in the state if elected.
The meeting, which attracted the leadership of many labour groups, was led by the Ogun State TUC Chairman, Seyi Adebanjo, who chided the outgoing government for neglecting the welfare of workers in the state.
Isiaka said, “We have to be creative and look inwards in making more economic opportunities for ourselves in view of the current global economic downturn we may face this year. To this end, I will pursue the objective of making Ogun State an oil-producing state to make the state better for the future generations. We can make the cake bigger by also pursuing the bitumen deposits in Ogun East and the Olokola Export Processing Zone project.
“It is unfortunate that we have a government that has been irresponsible and reckless in its handling of the state’s finances. I want to assure you all that under my watch, the welfare of workers and, indeed, everyone in the state will be enhanced through the four pillars of my ‘Life More Abundant’ manifesto”.
Isiaka, who is an investment banker and former Managing Director of Gateway Holdings, also promised to help Ogun State workers to access the National Housing Fund to enable them build their own houses.
In his remarks, the state TUC chairman berated Gov. Amosun for failing to aid workers in the areas of housing and other indices of human welfare. He, therefore, urged Isiaka to give governance a human face when elected into office.
“Our situation has never been this bad since the creation of the state, where workers are treated as slaves. Many statutory emoluments have not been paid since 2012 while the remittances and deductions are nowhere to be found”, Adebanjo said.

Buhari To Record Message In Hausa For Broadcast In The North Urging Peaceful Elections

muhammadu-buhariOfficials of the All Progressives Congress, APC, have blamed the incident in some parts of the North where objects were thrown at a campaign convoy of Presudent Goodluck Jonathan on fifth columnists within the president’s own Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Nonetheless, the officials disclosed that the party’s presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) is seriously concerned about the incident, and his reaction is expected to be recorded in Hausa before the end of Friday to be broadcast on radio stations across the North, urging people to understand the need for a peaceful election and not to foment trouble.
The Director-General of Buhari’s campaign organization, Malam Garba Shehu, who made this position known, said the message would also be translated into English to ensure Nigerians understand the need for a rancor-free atmosphere not only for election period but including life and living before and after the elections.
He, however, pointed to the fact that grudges created within PDP across the country as a result of its primaries may also be responsible for the attacks on the presidential convoy.
Shehu reminded journalists that the APC came out and condemned violence of any kind after the stone throwing incident in Katsina noting that violence is totally unacceptable to the opposition party.
The APC campaign spokesman recalled that a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary of APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed after the Katsina incident, said President Jonathan should be free to campaign anywhere in the country without hindrance.

Rapper Tiny Doo facing long prison sentence over lyrics

'I feel like they're trying to eradicate black men'

Song lyrics that glorify violence are hardly uncommon. But a prosecutor in California says one rapper's violent lyrics go beyond creative license to conspiracy.
San Diego-based rapper Tiny Doo has already spent eight months in prison, and faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted under a little-known California statute that makes it illegal to benefit from gang activities.
The statute in question is California Penal Code 182.5. The code makes it a felony for anyone to participate in a criminal street gang, have knowledge that a street gang has engaged in criminal activity, or benefit from that activity.
It's that last part -- benefiting from criminal activity -- that prosecutors are going after the rapper for.
Tiny Doo, whose real name is Brandon Duncan, faces nine counts of criminal street gang conspiracy because prosecutors allege he and 14 other alleged gang members increased their stature and respect following a rash of shootings in the city in 2013.
Prosecutors point to Tiny Doo's album, "No Safety," and to lyrics like "Ain't no safety on this pistol I'm holding" as examples of a "direct correlation to what the gang has been doing."
No one suggests the rapper ever actually pulled a trigger.
In fact, Duncan may rap about violence but he's got no criminal record.
Duncan told CNN's Don Lemon he's just "painting a picture of urban street life" with his lyrics.
"The studio is my canvas. I'm just painting a picture," he said. "I'm not telling anybody to go out and kill somebody."
He denied any involvement with any gang but said the prosecution has him concerned about future creative expression.
"I would love to continue to rap," he said. "But these people have you scared to do anything around here."
Prosecutors say lyrics aren't the only evidence they have. At Duncan's preliminary hearing, they presented social media posts that they say prove Duncan is still a gang member.
CNN Legal Analyst Mark Geragos says the district attorney may be trying to send a message "that you shouldn't glorify or glamorize gang activity."
"The problem is you're going to run straight head-on into the First Amendment," he said. "If they don't have anything other than the album, this case I don't think would ever stand up."

Ebola vaccine to be tested in Africa

The world is a lot closer to having a real weapon to fight Ebola. Vaccine doses should arrive in West Africa Friday.

Researches reported Tuesday that the Ebola virus strain that's killed more than 8,600 people in West Africa is mutating in a way that could make experimental drugs less likely to help. The researches added that they had found 10 new mutations that might interfere with how three of the most advanced...
